Research Activities
-
To assess and critique education policies which have
been designed to address the educational and social needs
of economically disadvantaged male and female youth attending
diverse secondary school programs in BC and Ontario, Canada;
-
Comparatively to assess the cultural experiences of schooling,
school exclusions and broader socio-cultural experiences
of three distinctive group of economically disadvantaged
male and female youth (homeless youth, youth living in
public housing, and immigrant and refugee youth), together
with their parents and teachers;
-
To assess the part played by school culture, by social
change and by teachers, in the social reproduction of
youth culture(s) in relation to issues of identity, culture
and change;
-
To explore the ways in which diverse female and male
youth are represented in history and contemporary aspects
of society through media ('street homelessness'), education
and public source documentation (e.g., legal documents)
across diverse social and geographical spaces in Canadian
cities.
-
To illuminate, through the key concept of difference/social
positioning, the expressed educational and social needs
of Canadian youth and the associated implications for
future policy development. The research project is intended
to build on our current knowledge of the relationship
between youth cultures), economic disadvantage and social/cultural
exclusion.
