Perspectives on Teaching - Variations on a theme
My longest and most enduring passion is for
teaching. For over a decade I have been researching and articulating
different philosophical orientations to teaching. Since the
late 1980’s, my students and I have been studying the
beliefs, intentions, and practices of teachers around the
world. From the Yukon to Tucson, and from Saskatoon to Shanghai,
we have probed the empirical, conceptual, and philosophical
roots of different views of teaching. Our purpose was, and
is, to articulate variations on what effective teaching means.
We have, to date, studied hundreds of teachers in at least
five different countries, and across a wide range of disciplines.
Some of our work includes:
Pratt, D.D. and Nesbit, T. (2000). Discourses and cultures
of teaching. Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education. San
Francisco: Jossey-Bass. [click here]
Pratt, D.D. and Associates (1998). Five Perspectives on Teaching
in Adult and Higher Education. Malabar, FL: Krieger, Publishers.
