The short description:
This seminar investigates the principles and practices that constitute various forms of ethnography as they are taken up in educational contexts. The seminar has several aims. Throughout, we shall examine the conceptual underpinnings and methodological approaches to educational ethnography, drawing upon debates in feminist cultural studies, sociology, and anthropology. Second, it will provide students with the skills to begin to use ethnographic methods as they learn about the different contrasting traditions of ethnography. Students who have established research interests will be expected to integrate what they learn from the course in whatever ways are appropriate to the setting in which they may be conducting future ethnographic research.
